Former NBA player and current analyst Richard Jefferson has shared his perspective on the future of Giannis Antetokounmpo with the Bucks.
According to Jefferson, Milwaukee faces a critical two-year window to secure an NBA championship if they intend to keep their franchise cornerstone in Milwaukee.
Jefferson pointed out that injuries, a vulnerability that has impacted Giannis in the past, could significantly affect the team’s postseason success.
“[Bucks can retain Giannis] If they win a Championship in the next two years, if they don’t, I think he’s [Giannis] gone… I don’t think the Bucks are back at the drawing board,” he said on the Road Trippin’ Podcast, via Ananth Narasimman of The Sports Rush.
“I think they changed their coach; I think they got two years… If they win a championship, I think he will stay; if they do not, I think he will have an opportunity to move on.”
The Bucks, who were considered contenders last season, faced a disappointing first-round exit in the playoffs, despite securing the top seed.
Subsequently, they made significant changes by parting ways with coach Mike Budenholzer and appointing Adrian Griffin, formerly with the Raptors, as head coach.
Giannis, with three years left on his 5-year, $228 million contract, holds the power to decide his future with a player option in the final year.
For Milwaukee, the clock is ticking, and the next two years could determine not only their championship aspirations but also their ability to retain their superstar.
