Why aren’t England playing in a 150th anniversary kit but Scotland are?

NOSTALGIC fans will have noticed one special feature of the warm-up tops as Scotland took on England at Hampden Park.

The 150th anniversary match between international football’s oldest rivals was given a unique touch to boost a charity auction.

Both sides wore old-fashioned shirts ahead of kick-off – with Scotland sticking with it for the match.

The England squad’s tops are limited edition and not to be retailed.

Instead they are being auctioned for the FA’s official charity partner, the Alzheimer’s Society.

Three Lions’ skipper Harry Kane and Scottish counterpart Andy Robertson had already given a preview of the replica outfit on an historic site.

The pair posed at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow – the scene of a 0-0 draw in the rivals’ first ever clash on November 30 1872.

The tops are old-style simplicity itself.

England’s is all-white and Scotland’s their traditional dark blue.

The only adornment on each shirt is a badge – to complete the vintage appearance.

The plan was always for England to use the shirts only as “pre-match tops”.

And once the action started they were in their usual white shirts with blue shoulder trim.

The one-off auction of the evocative tops is LIVE NOW and runs until 8pm on Saturday September 30.

The money raised will help the Alzheimer’s Society fund research for diagnosing dementia.

The condition is the UK’s biggest killer, with one in three people born today developing it at some stage.

But many people still see dementia as a sign of normal ageing.

Others are uncertain of the symptoms or afraid to visit their GP.
