World number one Ronnie O’Sullivan is out of the English Open after a shock last-16 loss to China’s Zhang Anda.
Sullivan led 1-0 and 2-1, but world number 57 Zhang hit back with breaks of 97, 50 and 116 to seal a 4-2 victory.
Zhang will play compatriot Zhou Yuelong in the quarter-finals after the latter beat England’s Ali Carter 4-1.
O’Sullivan’s defeat meant Luca Brecel could have topped the world rankings with a run to the semi-finals, but he lost 4-3 to Ding Junhui.
A topsy-turvy match saw world champion Brecel go 2-0 up before China’s Ding won three frames in a row to nudge in front.
Belgium’s Brecel hit back to make it 3-3, but Ding took the decider with a break of 58 to set up a quarter-final against either Liu Hongyu or Mark Williams.
Matthew Selt beat fellow Englishman Ricky Walden 4-3 to set up a last-eight match against Judd Trump, who came from 2-1 down to beat Yuan Sijun 4-2.
John Higgins is also through to the quarter-finals after an impressive 4-1 victory over Oliver Lines that included an opening break of 145.
The Scot will play England’s Martin O’Donnell after he beat China’s He Guoqiang 4-2.
