Premier League panel delivers final ruling on Newcastle goal against Arsenal

The Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled that Newcastle United’s controversial winning goal against Arsenal was correctly allowed to stand.

The Gunners were left furious that Anthony Gordon’s goal in the 64th minute, which ultimately decided the game, was not ruled out for a variety of possible infringements.

The goal was subject to multiple VAR checks for the ball potentially going out of play, an alleged foul from Joelinton in the build-up and an offside on Gordon. But none were deemed clear errors.

“Embarrassing what happened – how this goal stands, in the Premier League – this league we say is the best in the world. I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace and there’s too much at stake here,” Arteta said post-match as he unleashed a tirade.

Arsenal stood by their manager, issuing a public statement in support of his comments.

“Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening,” the Gunners said.

But the Independent Key Match Incidents Panel, which consists of three former players and/or coaches, plus a representative each from the Premier League and PGMOL, has now decided that the Gordon goal standing was the correct outcome.

ESPN has shared details of the verdict on the potential foul, which states: “…although Joelinton does have his hands on Gabriel, there isn’t enough to award a foul as Gabriel had made an action to play the ball before any contact.” The panel was also of the view that there wasn’t sufficient proof to overturn either the ball potentially going out of play or the possible offside.

However, the panel was also of the opinion that two red card offences were missed.

A “very dangerous challenge” from Kai Havertz on Sean Longstaff in the first half should have resulted in the Arsenal player being sent off. Bruno Guimaraes should also have seen red for his arm to Jorginho’s head shortly before half-time.
