Skyler Ngo rides hot start in the Final Round to the win

Skyler Ngo, a senior at San Diego State, erased a one-shot deficit to enter the final round en route to winning the 2023 Coronado City Championship at Coronado Golf Course in Coronado, Calif.

Ngo shot a first-round 4-under 68 to trail Parker Sisk and Scotland Schmidt by one shot heading into the second round.

Then Ngo caught fire, recording five birdies in his first seven holes to propel himself into the lead. He would play the last 11 holes at 1-over, but he was far enough out in front that no one was able to put the pressure on him.

“My ball striking was solid all week,” Ngo said. “I was able to control where the ball was going a majority of the time, and my chipping was great. I got up and down seven out of eight times for the tournament.”

Ngo added, “I knew I needed a start hot, so I just channeled my inner athlete and knew what I needed to do. I had full confidence in every shot.”

After those seven holes, Ngo had turned the one-shot deficit into a three-shot lead.

“My mindset was to come out aggressive and put some pressure on the leaders and see if they break,” Ngo said. “I was feeling confident in my game, and I knew if I could make some birdies early, I would be in a good spot.”

Ngo also won the 2019 Las Vegas City Amateur a couple of years ago and can add this one to his resume.

The leaderboard was littered with San Diego State golfers, with Justin Hastings and Shea Lague finishing T2, Jack Townsend finishing T5, and Jackson Moss finishing T7.

“It’s a great confidence booster going into the season personally knowing that I can play well enough to win,” Ngo said. “It’s also nice to see that all my teammates who played in the tournament played well, and as a team, we are looking strong.”

SENIOR DIVISION

Jason Bittick

In the Senior Division, Jason Bittick went wire-to-wire to win by eight shots, shooting 2-under with rounds of 72-70.

Brian Smyth and Jack Plotkin finished T2 at 6-over.

Gary Barker, Tony Ralph, and Jonas Cikotas finished T4 at 8-over. Curtis Worley finished in solo seventh place at 9-over.
