The U.S. Open continued from Greensboro, North Carolina, with the Day 4 prelims on Saturday morning.
Abbey Weitzeil led a loaded 100 free field just ahead of Simone Manuel, while some of the top names on the men’s side missed the A final.
Summer McIntosh, Ryan Held, Cody Miller and Kate Douglass claimed top seeds as well.
U.S. Open: Women’s 200 Backstroke
Canada’s Summer McIntosh claimed the top seed in a loaded 20 backstroke field, edging out a slew of U.S. Olympians for the top spot. McIntosh finished in 2:08.56.
Claire Curzan took the second seed in 2:08.78, followed by Regan Smith (2:09.37) and Phoebe Bacon (2:11.02).
U.S. Open: Men’s 200 Backstroke
The men’s prelims in the 200 back was also extremely close.
Hubert Kos took the top seed, getting to the wall in1:58.52, just there e hundredths of a second ahead of Kieran Smith, who finished in 1:58.55.
Brandon Miller grabbed the third seed in 1:58.59, the final swimmer to break two minutes in the event.
U.S. Open: Women’s 100 Free
An absolutely loaded field hit the water for the women’s 100 frees the top eight are all either Olympians or world champions.
Three swimmers broke 54 seconds, led by Abbey Weitzeil, who touched the wall in 53.80.
Simone Manuel threw down a stellar race to take the second seed in 53.94, followed by Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh (53.95).
Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey, fresh off of her double wins on Friday, took the fourth seed in 54.22.
Torri Huske, who won the 100 butterfly on Friday, took the fifth seed in 54.31 ahead of Canadian Olympian Mary-Sophie Harvey (54.73) and U.S. Olympians Olivia Smoliga (54.83) and Katharine Berkoff (55.01), setting up what looks to be a thrilling final.
Men’s 100 Free
The men’s 100 free saw several of the big names in the sport miss out on the A final.
Caeleb Dressel, Shaine Casas and Josh Liendo all landed in the B final after prelims on Saturday morning.
The top seed in the finals went to Ryan Held, who touched the wall in 48.47.
Matt King took the second seed in 48.63, followed by Nandor Nemeth (48.67), Chris Guiliano (48.72) and Drew Kibler (48.79).
U.S. Open: Women’s 200 Breaststroke
Virginia swimmers past and present took three of the top four spots in the 200 breaststroke prelims.
Kate Douglass cruised to the top seed in 2:23.81, nearly three seconds ahead of the field.
Alex Walsh grabbed the second seed with a swim of 2:26.21 to hold off Lithuania’s Kotryna Teterevkova (2:26.46) and Virginia’s Ella Nelson (2:26.69).
Lily King took the fifth spot in 2:27.57. Lydia Jacoby grabbed the eighth spot (2:30.85).
U.S. Open: Men’s 200 Breaststroke
Cody Miller and Matt Fallon were just six hundredths of a second apart in the 200 breaststroke prelims.
Miller claimed the top seed with a swim of 2:09.80, while Fallon was just behind in 2:09.86.
They were the only swimmers to go under 2:12 in the event.
Chase Kalisz and Will Licon tied for the third spot in 2:12.39.
U.S. Olympian Nic Fink swam to the 12th spot in 2:14.79.
U.S. Open: Women’s 200 Butterfly
On the second leg of a double, Regan Smith claimed the top seed in the 200 butterfly. She got to the wall in 2:08.10, the only swimmer int he field to break 2:10.
Lindsay Looney claimed the second seed with a swim of 2:10.39, while, Dakota Luther (2:11.20) and Charlotte Hook (2:12.10) are looming for the final.
U.S. Open: Men’s 200 Butterfly
A strong field in the 200 butterfly closed the morning events.
Michal Chmielewski claimed the top seed in 1:54.88, while Tennessee’s Martin Espernberger was second in 1:55.51.
Mission Viejo’s Trenton Julian took the third seed in 1:56.22, followed by Ilya Kharun (1:57.41), Zach Harting (1:57.67), Luca Urlando (1:57.95) and Carson Foster (1:57.96).
