WA Football Celebrates International Volunteers Day With New Award

WA Football Celebrates International Volunteers Day With New AwardMonday, December 4, 2023 – 2:51 PM

In recognition of International Volunteers Day on Tuesday December 5 the West Australian Football Commission proudly acknowledges the invaluable contributions of volunteers to football communities across the state.

As a testament to their significance, the AFL introduced several new categories for the Toyota AFL National Volunteer of the Year Awards in 2023, including the prestigious Young Volunteer of the Year award.

This special category aims to honour volunteers under the age of 25 who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their junior footy clubs, whether as current or past players, or simply passionate community contributors.

Clubs across the state nominated outstanding young volunteers for this award, showcasing the incredible impact of the youth within the football community.

The 2023 Metro winners of these categories were.

Metro Central Young Volunteer of the Year – Gabriel Fleming (20) – Swan View Junior Football Club

Serving as his team’s coach for three consecutive years, Gabriel is highly respected by both players and their families. Not only does he guide his team, but he also extended his support to the year 7 team during their finals campaign, showcasing his dedication to the community.

Gabriel consistently volunteers his time to assist and uplift the club, embodying the spirit of the Young Volunteer of the Year award.

Metro North Young Volunteer of the Year – Declan Searson (20) – Quinns District Junior Football Club

Declan Searson, the Metro North Young Volunteer of the Year, has been an integral part of his club’s committee for two years. Transitioning from Auskick to Year 12, Declan now serves as the club’s grounds person and property manager. His responsibilities include coordinating line markings, liaising with the council, and managing all club merchandise and equipment.

Declan’s commitment extends beyond administrative duties, as he generously dedicates his time to the canteen on Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays, even donning the club mascot uniform when needed. His multifaceted contributions make him a standout young volunteer.

Metro South Conference Young Volunteer of the Year – Jack Mansfield (13) – Piara Waters Junior Football Club

Jack Mansfield, the Metro South Conference Young Volunteer of the Year, has made a remarkable impact at the tender age of 13. Engaging with his club’s Starkick program for the past three years, Jack assumed the role of Assistant Coach this year. In moments when the coach was unavailable, Jack stepped up to lead the sessions, showcasing his leadership and commitment.

Jack’s contributions are further underscored by the massive 10 nominations he received for his club’s junior club person award, reflecting the high regard in which he is held by both the club and participating families in the Starkick program.

Jenne Russell, Club Development & Volunteer Specialist at the West Australian Football Commission, expressed her admiration for the exceptional quality of the nominations.

“Choosing only three winners was a challenge as there were so many amazing stories from across the metro junior competition,” she said.

Volunteers like Gabriel Fleming, Declan Searson, and Jack Mansfield embody the backbone of community football. Their dedication not only helps grow a strong culture within their clubs but also ensures a vibrant game day environment for the entire football community.

On International Volunteers Day, we celebrate these young volunteers who are the unsung heroes of the football community, making a lasting impact on and off the field.
