The 2024 Wuhan Open final will be contested between Si Jiahui and Xiao Guodong at the Optics Valley Convention & Exhibition Centre on Saturday.
There will be a new ranking event winner for the first time in almost a year, since Zhang Anda captured the International Championship on home soil in 2023.
The title-deciding affair also marks only the third time that a ranking event final will take place between two competitors from mainland China.
Xiao was involved on the first of those occasions – losing to Ding Junhui at the 2013 Shanghai Masters – while Zhao Xintong beat Yan Bingtao to claim the 2022 German Masters.
There is a champion’s cheque worth £140,000 up for grabs, with the winner also likely to receive an invite to the upcoming Champion of Champions in Bolton as well.
What happened in the semi-finals?
It was a memorable day of action on Friday as both semi-finals produced high-quality battles.
Xiao, ranked 41 places above his last-four opponent Long Zehuang, appeared to be in trouble when trailing 4-1.
The latter, who was playing in front of his home crowd in Wuhan, compiled terrific breaks of 141 and 104 to seemingly ascertain control of the fixture.
But Xiao summoned up the form that saw him beat world champion Kyren Wilson, Ali Carter, and Shaun Murphy earlier this week – contributing a brace of his own tons to fight back before sealing victory with a run of 91.
There were even more fireworks in the second encounter as Si spectacularly booked his spot in the 2024 Wuhan Open final at the expense of world number one Judd Trump.
Trump, the reigning champion, began the affair in strong fashion by compiling a break of 109 in the opening frame.
But Si mostly dominated thereafter, constructing a superb 147 break in addition to making contributions of 144, 108, 81, 71, and 61 amid a frenzied atmosphere inside the venue.
The 22 year-old had already announced himself as a prodigious talent by reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 World Snooker Championship.
Yet a first ever victory over Trump, completed with such an assertive display, represents another stepping stone towards him reaching the very top of the game.
Who will win the 2024 Wuhan Open final?
Both Si and Xiao will be in familiar territory having both contested ranking event finals in the past, but neither has etched his name onto silverware yet.
As a result, it’s difficult to predict how they’ll react if and when the winning line comes into full sight in this best-of-19 frame final.
While Si produced one of the performances of the campaign so far to beat Trump, it shouldn’t be forgotten the formidable players Xiao has had to overcome in reaching the concluding hurdle too.
Success for the latter would see the 35 year-old draw within touching distance of a first-ever ranking among the world’s top 16.
That would bring him into contention for automatic seeding at the UK Championship and a potential invite to the Masters.
Si joined that elite group for the first time earlier this season following his semi-final appearance at the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters.
But the main prize in Wuhan would see the German Masters runner-up leapfrog his way above Ding Junhui into the top ten of the world rankings to become China’s top-ranked snooker player.
The two finalists have faced each other three times on the main tour, with Si enjoying the upper hand and Xiao’s only victory coming in the single-frame Snooker Shoot Out.
This clash will undoubtedly be their most important, with a breakthrough moment of their respective careers and a maiden ranking title on the line.
The 2024 Wuhan Open final takes place over two sessions, beginning at 7am UTC+1 and resuming at 12:30pm UTC+1.
