SPOTTED: Titleist GT280 Mini Driver Tees Off on Tour

The start of a new PGA Tour season at Kapalua has given Titleist the opportunity to get ahead of the upcoming blitz of new releases with a teaser of its upcoming GT280 Mini Driver.

With the updated version on the USGA list, it’s possible that Titleist staffers like Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris will have the new club in play.

As is protocol for Titleist’s Tour seeding and validation process, technical details are few and far between. What we do know is that the GT280 is the finished version of the prototype 2-Wood that popped up at last year’s PLAYERS Championship.

It’s also clear from the provided photos that Titleist’s take on a mini driver included front and back flip weights for trajectory tuning and the company’s SureFit hosel system.

A different kind of mini?

If we take a leap and assume that the “280” in GT280 refers to the volume of the clubhead, that suggests a take on mini that’s a bit smaller than what’s on the market right now from Titleist’s competitors.

The Mini Driver is an emerging category in the equipment space. For the better part of the last several years, TaylorMade has been the exclusive player in the category, but we can confidently say that the number of offers will grow significantly in the coming months.

On Tour, Minis are used almost exclusively as off-the-tee replacements for drivers. Perhaps surprisingly, TOUR pros go to the mine, not to increase accuracy, but rather when the driver is too long off the tee.

A Mini movement

As more mini models make their way to retail, it’s going to be interesting to see which companies lean almost exclusively in mini drivers as standard driver replacement and which choose to go smaller and making their minis viable 3-wood replacements that can be comfortably hit off-the-deck.

The reality is that while Mini drivers are intriguing, the category itself will likely prove to be relatively niche. That said, it’s always good to have options – especially towards the top of the bag. So, at an absolute minimum, golfers are about to have several new options to choose from.

More To Come

We’ll have more information as we get closer to the GT280 launch in early spring. In the meantime, let us know if you’re excited about more Mini Drivers hitting the market or if the category isn’t for you.
