Marko issues dramatic warning over Verstappen’s Red Bull future

Helmut Marko has issued a stark warning to Red Bull Racing: provide Max Verstappen with a consistently competitive car, or risk losing him.

While Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until 2028, Marko insists that the reigning champion will not remain with the team if they fail to deliver a car capable of fighting consistently for victories.

Red Bull entered the 2024 season as the team to beat, with Verstappen building an early lead in the Drivers’ Championship.

However, mid-season struggles saw the team outclassed at various circuits by McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes.

While Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive Drivers’ title with two races to spare, Red Bull lost the Constructors’ crown to McLaren.

Marko acknowledged the pressure is now firmly on the team to rebound in 2025 and provide Verstappen with a competitive package.

A Warning Shot

Marko delivered a clear ultimatum to Red Bull: the team’s RB21 must remain competitive at the front of the Formula 1 field, or Verstappen will walk.

“We have to provide him with a car with which he is able to win under his own steam,” Marko told F1-Insider.

“It can be one to two tenths of a second slower than others, but unlike last year’s car, it has to be competitive throughout the season and on every track.

“If we don’t succeed, there is no reason for Max to stay with us. You have to be realistic about that.”

The Austrian’s comments underline the precarious position Red Bull could find itself in if the team’s 2025 campaign falters.

Verstappen’s ability to dominate in a less-than-perfect car has been crucial to Red Bull’s recent success, but even his remarkable talent may not be enough to compensate if the RB21 is unable to consistently challenge for race wins.

Max’s Future in Question

Marko’s remarks align with recent statements from Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, who hinted that the reigning World Champion’s long-term commitment to Red Bull hinges on the team’s competitiveness.

“He can stay with Red Bull if he sees a point to it. His goal is still to be able to win races,” Jos Verstappen said.

“If he feels that this is no longer possible at Red Bull, a move is not out of the question.”

Marko’s message is clear: complacency is not an option for Red Bull. They must consistently provide Verstappen with the tools to succeed, or risk losing their star driver to a rival team.

With the 2025 season just around the corner, the pressure is on for the bulls to deliver a car that can once again challenge for dominance.
