Federico Burdisso Lowers Laszlo Cseh’s 200 Fly Meet Record En-Route To Treble In Geneva

Federico Burdisso lowered Laszlo Cseh’s 200 fly meet record en-route to completing the butterfly treble on the final day of the Geneva International Challenge.

The Italian won the 50 and 100 on Saturday and returned to the water on Sunday where he dominated the four-length event in 1:56.72, 0.65 inside Cseh’s 1:57.37 from 2016.

Burdisso, who won bronze in Tokyo, was more than four seconds quicker than the next man home with Miguel Martinez Novoa of Spain who clocked 2:00.85.

It completed a fine couple of days for the 23-year-old who won the 50 on Saturday in 23.86 before posting 52.86 in the 100.

Carlos D’Ambrosio completed the 100/200 free double with victory in the longer race in 1:49.77, the Italian the only man inside 1:50.

The seven-time European champion returned for the 50 free – the final event of the meet. However, it was Jordan Cooley who won the title with the only sub-23 time of 22.76.

D’Ambrosio was second in 23.14 with Sergio De Celis Montalban third in 23.21.

Roman Mityukov overcame a 0.30 deficit at halfway to move past Tomer Shuster and add the 100 back to the 200 he won on Saturday in 54.47.

Michele Lamberti replicated his 200 silver in 55.03 with Shuster – winner of the 50 – third in 55.61.

Roos Vanotterdijk won the women’s 100 back, leading throughout to stop the clock in 1:00.80. Anita Gastaldi was second in 1:01.65 with Sara Curtis next home in 1:01.95.

Curtis and Vanotterdijk were reacquainted once more in the 50 free with the pair occupying the centre lanes. It was the former who won out, clocking 25.19 to the Belgian’s 25.50. Chiara Tarantino completed the podium in 25.73.

Francisca Soares Martins won the women’s 200 free in 2;00.12 with 2008-born Lucrezia Domina lowering the junior meet record to 2:01.09. The Italian was 1.30secs inside the previous mark of 2:02.39 set by a certain Federica Pellegrini back in January 2004. Eight months later she would go on to win silver at the Olympic Games in Athens, the start of an historic career which only came to an end in November 2021.

Nayara Pineda Lopez set a junior meet record in the 100m breaststroke for the second time in a day, going 1:09.29 after posting 1:10.09 in the prelims. It was enough to guide her to first place and complete the 50/100m double. Anna Pirovano (1:09.59) and Lucrezia Mincini – winner of the 200 – who clocked 1:09.96 followed the Spaniard home.

Andrea Prapugicu won the men’s 100m breaststroke in 1;02.03.

Laura Cabanes Garzas won the women’s 200 fly in 2:13.80.
