Russell embraces new chapter at Mercedes: ‘Ending my beginning’

George Russell believes he has reached “the end of the beginning” of his F1 career and will now enter a new pivotal phase in the sport as he leads Mercedes into its post-Hamilton era.

Following the seven-time world champion’s move to Ferrari, Russell is now the central figure in Mercedes’ quest to return to championship-winning form, taking on greater responsibility alongside his new, young teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Russell, who turns 27 next month, feels ready to step up as the lead driver.

Reflecting on his own career progression and comparing it to past F1 greats, he pointed out how dominant champions like Hamilton and Michael Schumacher were at a similar stage when they steered their career into a new era.

Russell Reflects on His Journey

“I am entering a new chapter in my career. I am ending my beginning and entering the mid-stage,” Russell stated in an interview published on Mercedes’ official website.

“Lewis was 29 when he joined Mercedes and started winning all those championships, and Michael was early 30s at Ferrari.

“Nowadays everyone starts younger and younger – my debut came at 20. But I feel ready now to fulfil roles at the team, but the most important part of that is driving as quickly as possible, and I feel I’m in a good place to do that.

“I’ll continue to want to learn and be open and take nothing for granted. You either have the speed or you don’t, but there is no doubt these guys coming in are going to be competitive.”

Confidence in His Young Teammate

Russell’s comments come as F1 prepares for an influx of new talent in 2024. The grid will welcome six drivers beginning their first full campaign in Melbourne, including three making their full Grand Prix debut.

Among them is Antonelli, the highly rated 18-year-old Italian who has risen through Mercedes’ junior programme to secure a full-time F1 seat.

Despite the young rookie’s lack of experience, Russell has full confidence in his teammate’s ability to adapt quickly to the demands of Formula 1.

“Kimi is such a fantastic driver. He does not have the experience yet, but I am sure he will be up to speed very quickly,” Russell said.

“He has already integrated so well. We have both been racing from a young age and we know what needs to be fed back to the team. He is young, but his opinion will be just as valid.”

With Russell taking the mantle as Mercedes’ lead driver and Antonelli stepping into his rookie season, the Silver Arrows squad heads into its future.

While Hamilton’s departure marks the end of a dominant chapter in the team’s history, Russell’s confidence and ambition signal the beginning of a new challenge – one he feels fully prepared to embrace.
