Medvedev Parts Ways with Gilles Simon After a Year

By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Sunday February 2, 2025

Daniil Medvedev is down to one Gilles on his coaching staff once again.

The former World No.1 announced a split with Gilles Simon today on social media, ahead of his appearance at the ABN Amro in Rotterdam.

“It was honestly a good experience,” Medvedev told reporters in Rotterdam, according to tennis journalist David Avakian. “There were a lot of good things me and Gilles [Cervara] can take going forward. It just didn’t work out exactly the way we wanted in terms of results.”

The pair commenced their work a year ago, and Medvedev did not win a title with Simon on his team.

“We didn’t win a title or grand slam or something like this,” said the Russian. “But I learned a lot of new things and it gave me a new perspective on tennis and I’m sure it’s going to help me in the future. We will see how it will work out for both of us. We remain with good feelings, but we’re not working together anymore.”

Simon took to social media to confirm the news:

“A big thank you to Daniil and to the whole team for this year spent together,” he wrote. “It was a great experience, very interesting, and I will only have good memories of it. I wish you all the best for the future and above all to achieve your goals!”

Seventh-ranked Medvedev went 46-21 in 2024. So far this year he is 1-1 with a second round loss to 19-year-old American Learner Tien at the Australian Open.

Seeded second at Rotterdam, Medvedev will face Stan Wawrinka in his first match.
