Medvedev Moves on in Marseille

Unique soloist Daniil Medvedev dreams of a single goal: Becoming a successful two-timer.

Today, Medvedev took a major step toward completing his quest.

Wild card Medvedev fended off all five break points he faced defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-2 to reach his 57th Tour-level semifinal and first semifinal of the season in Marseille.

WTA: Stefano Vukov Will Remain Suspended

Master of multiple cities, Medvedev has won all 20 of his ATP titles in 20 different cities.

Now, 2021 Marseille champion Medvedev stands two wins away from a career first: Winning the same tournament twice.

Under pressure early against the big-hitting German, Medvedev saved a pair of break points to hold in both the fourth and sixth games.

Then, the former No. 1 flipped the set converting his third break point to edge ahead 4-3.

Medvedev denied a fifth break point backing up the break for 5-3. The lanky Medvedev converted his second set point to go up a set.

The second set saw Medvedev reel off 12 of 14 points on serve in one stretch as he powered to a 4-1 lead. Medvedev closed in 78 minutes.

Former Australian Open finalist Medvedev is playing for his first title since he won the 2023 Rome. Eighteen of his 20 titles have come on hard court.

This marks Medvedev’s first ATP-250 appearance since 2023 and could be a springboard to a career first.

Next up for Medvedev is either Daniel Altmaier or Hamad Medjedovic in tomorrow’s semifinals.

Earlier, home favorite Ugo Humbert used his lefty serve to slice up Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-4 and score his 150th career win.

The second-seeded Humbert won 29 of 34 first-serve points and saved all three break points he faced in a 98-minute win.

Denying Sonego his 150th career win, Humbert continued his torrid tear beneath a roof on home soil.

Consider Humbert has been nearly unbeatable at home indoors.

Humbert is 16-1 in his last 17 matches played indoors on French soil. That streak includes winning titles at 2023 Metz and Marseille last season as well as his electrifying Paris run last November. Humbert reached his maiden ATP 1000 final at the Rolex Paris Masters falling to Alexander Zverev in the final.

On Saturday, Humbert will face Zizou Bergs for a spot in the Marseille final.
