Fonseca Surges, Sinner Passes Alcaraz in Weeks at No.1

By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Monday February 17, 2025

Joao Fonseca is making his way up the ATP rankings at a rapid clip. The 18-year-old, who became the tenth-youngest player to claim an ATP title in the Open Era on Sunday in Beunos Aires, jumped 31 spots from No.99 to No.68 in the February 17 edition of the men’s singles rankings.

Tennis Express

Fonseca, the youngest player from South America to claim an ATP title in 38 years, is the No.1 Brazilian in today’s rankings.

He will take his spot in the 500-level draw at Rio this week, where he will face Alexandre Muller in the first round.

Fonseca is the only player under 19 to rank inside the ATP’s Top 350.

Fonseca’s victim in the Buenos Aires semifinals, Laslo Djere, makes his Top 100 return this week. The Serbian, a former World No.27, rises 14 spots to No.98.

Also rising 14 is another Serbian, former World No.27 Miomir Kecmanovic, who saved a pair of championship points to defeat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Sunday’s Delray Beach final.

Davidovich Fokina rises ten spots back to No.50 for his runner-up performance in Florida.

Medjedovic Career-High (+23)

Hamad Medjedovic kept things rolling on a special week for Serbian tennis as the 21-year-old reached his second ATP final in Marseille. He jumps 23 spots to a career-high of No.73.

Marseille repeat champion Ugo Humbert is up three spots after claiming his seventh career title. Humbert jumps to No.14, one spot shy of his career-high.

American Alex Michelsen (+4 to No.33) and Spain’s Pedro Martinez (+4 to 37) hit fresh career high rankings today.

Of players yet to turn 21, Michelsen ranks second highest, only behind 21-ranked Arthur Fils.

Sinner Passes Alcaraz in Weeks at No.1

Jannik Sinner enters his 37th week atop the ATP rankings, which moves him ahead of Carlos Alcaraz in weeks at No.1. The Italian now ranks 16th all-time in weeks at No.1, and is closing in on Ilie Nastase (40), Andy Murray (41) and Gustavo Kuerten (43).
