The Next Great Force in Golf: Can Ludvig Aberg Win the 2025 Masters? – Golf News

The build-up to the 2025 Masters has revolved around Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, and whether the Northern Irishman can overcome the American on an Augusta National course where he is proving difficult to beat. Scheffler, of course, has won two of the last three Masters tournaments and the expectation is that he will slip on a third career green jacket on Sunday the 13th of April.

Scheffler’s Masters Odds

This is, at least, what the recent sports betting markets for the 2025 showdown suggest with Scheffler priced at just 9/2 to win the Masters.

For further context, the closest contender to Scheffler in the latest Masters betting outright odds is McIlroy who is at 15/2.

In short, the view is that there is daylight between Scheffler and the rest of the field teeing it up at Augusta National.

However, is the 25-year-old Swede Ludvig Aberg being overlooked at 12/1?

While it might seem a bold question given Scheffler’s well-documented success during this tournament, there’s a strong case for Aberg finding himself atop the leaderboard come the end of Sunday at the Masters in 2025.

Scottie Scheffler won his second Masters title in three years

Timing is Everything

For starters, the Swede is beginning to win when it matters as was proven when he claimed the Genesis Invitational in mid-February. Aberg’s triumph at Torrey Pines was his second PGA Tour win and a sign of what the leaderboard of the professional game might look like in the future as the 25-year-old beat Scheffler and McIlroy on his way to the title. It’s also worth noting that Aberg needed to birdie four of his final six holes to win in California which was a task he was more than up to.

The reality is that this victory was a long time coming for Aberg who has now climbed to fourth in the official world rankings. Indeed, the Swede’s remarkable consistency suggested that his time in the winner’s circle was once again just around the corner having recorded 13 top-ten finishes, nine top-five finishes, and four runner-up finishes in 39 events before the Genesis Invitational.

Of course, this type of unshakeable form during regular PGA Tour events doesn’t always translate to the majors and the Masters in particular where the pressure is far greater than any other week on tour.

Aberg’s Masters Debut

However, Aberg appears unfazed by the biggest stage in golf having finished solo second at the 2024 Masters in his debut appearance at Augusta National.

Aberg ended four shots behind Scheffler’s winning total -11 but not before carding a three-under 69 in the final round. Undaunted by the grandeur of Sunday at the Masters, the Swede’s astonishing charge up the leaderboard was further proof that the world might be witnessing golf’s next great force.

Now, in 2025, the Swede will drive up Magnolia Lane buoyed by a regent PGA Tour win against the best players in the world and with the confidence of knowing his game is strong enough to meet the unique demands of Augusta National.

Will that equate to a win? While no one can say with absolute certainty that it will happen in 2025, it’s hard to believe that Aberg will retire without at least one green jacket to his name.
