Schumacher reacts to Hakkinen ‘F1 door still open’ comment

Mick Schumacher has reacted to recent comments from two-time F1 world champion Mika Hakkinen, who suggested that a return to the Formula 1 grid remains a possibility for the 25-year-old German.

Hakkinen recently shared his belief that “the door is still open” for Schumacher, provided he engages with the right people in the sport.

The remarks have sparked renewed speculation about Schumacher’s future, especially with the addition of an eleventh team in the sport in 2026: Cadillac F1.

Schumacher, who lost his Haas F1 seat at the end of the 2022 season after two years with the American team, took on a reserve driver role with Mercedes and currently competes competing with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship.

“I think he still has a chance to return to Formula 1,” Hakkinen commented. “The door is still open. You just have to talk to the right people.

“He has experience in Formula 1 and he has experience from various racing classes. And he is young. These are all good things, these are all positive factors.”

Schumacher’s Reaction: Gratitude and Optimism

Speaking in Australia this weekend ahead of his participation in the Race of Champions in Sydney, Schumacher addressed Hakkinen’s comments directly, expressing appreciation for the vote of confidence from the former McLaren star.

“Of course, it’s nice to hear that from Mika. He knows the sport very well,” Schumacher said, quoted by PlanetF1.

“As I’ve said in interviews before, I feel like I have what it takes for F1,” he stated firmly.

While his immediate focus remains on his WEC commitments with Alpine, his sights are set on a potential F1 return in 2026, a year that could mark a significant shift in the sport’s landscape.

“We’ll see what happens; the year is still long, and my goal is to return in 2026,” he added, leaving room for optimism. “We’ll see what unfolds.”

A New Opportunity with Cadillac F1?

Schumacher’s comments come at a pivotal moment, as the Cadillac F1 team was officially confirmed this week to join the grid in 2026.

The announcement has inevitably fueled speculation about potential driver lineups, with Schumacher’s name naturally entering the conversation given his F1 experience and current availability.

While there has been talk of Cadillac prioritizing an American driver to align with its U.S.-based identity, the team’s leadership has emphasized that selections will be merit-based.

Cadillac F1 team principal Graeme Lowdon addressed the driver market following the team’s confirmation.

“There’s some very talented drivers still out there,” he said.

“We hadn’t been able to be in the driver market until the entry was confirmed. Now it has, we can move forward with that.”

Lowdon avoided setting a firm timeline for announcements but underscored the team’s commitment to hiring based on skill.

“For sure we’re going to hire drivers based on merit,” he said, adding that an American driver could still fit that criterion.

“There’s nothing preventing a driver being selected on merit and being American. I think that would be something that a lot of fans would really want to see as well.”

With the 2026 F1 season still twelve months away, Schumacher remains patient, focusing on his WEC campaign while staying prepared for any potential openings in Formula 1.

As teams evaluate their options for the future, the young German’s name remains in the mix, and if the right opportunity presents itself, he may yet make his return to the F1 grid.
