Harry Maguire has admitted he would like to remain at Manchester United this summer unless the club put him up for sale, and he believes he will be granted his wish to stay.
The defender looked set to leave Man Utd last summer when he was stripped of the captain’s armband and deemed surplus to requirements by manager Erik ten Hag. A move to West Ham United fell through late in the transfer window, however, and Maguire remained at Old Trafford for the 2023/24 season.
Although not a guaranteed starter, Maguire managed to successfully work his way back into Ten Hag’s plans thanks to a combination of injury concerns for his teammates and his own solid defensive performances.
But following the major acquisition of Leny Yoro from Lille this summer, and consistent links with moves for Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt, Maguire’s future at Man Utd has once again been called into question.
When asked by Sky Sports whether or not he is keen to stay at Old Trafford, Maguire replied that he believes he’s ‘part of the future’ at the club.
“Unless the club tell me I’m up for sale or I’m not wanted there anymore,” he said.
“Everything I’ve heard and the action I’ve been shown from the club, I’m part of the future and it is time to crack on and make this club successful again, challenging for the big trophies. That’s what this club demands.”
Maguire currently has just one year left on his contract at Man Utd, and will likely be below both Lisandro Martinez and new signing Yoro in the defensive pecking order heading into the 2024/25 season.
While no offers for his services have been made this summer, Maguire has been tentatively linked with a move to Serie A as well as former suitors West Ham.
