Jordan Pickford shares stance on England’s future under Lee Carsley

Jordan Pickford has admitted that the decision on who will lead England permanently after Gareth Southgate is out of his hands, but hopes that his side can recover after their loss to Greece.

England Under-21’s boss Lee Carsley was immediately thrown into the interim position following the announcement that Southgate would step down after falling at the last hurdle of Euro 2024. His promotion saw him lead the Three Lions through successful September fixtures, recording wins over the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Carsley has returned for another international break, which began on a slightly sourer note. He was at the helm when England were defeated 2-1 by Greece on Thursday and will also be in the dugout for their clash with Finland on Sunday.

While Carsley has remained clear that he hopes to return to the youth side after three camps with England, the question still remains as to who will be given the job permanently.

“I’m not the hierarchy,” England shot-stopper Pickford said after the disappointing defeat. “It’s never nice for a player or staff to get beat at Wembley.

“We want to win every game we play when we put this shirt on and we didn’t. So we’ve got to keep going, dust ourselves down. What can we do better, what can we learn from and move on and get the result on Sunday.

“You’ve always got to learn. You’re never going to be perfect, even when you’re winning games. You can learn a lot from this. It’s about recovering well and getting ready for Sunday.”

England may have just three matches left with Carsley in charge, the first of which will come against Finland at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
