Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero appeared to aim pointed comments towards the club’s hierarchy after their latest dejecting defeat.
Spurs threw away a 2-0 goal lead against Chelsea on Sunday as their London rivals waltzed their way to a 4-3 victory, with Romero a surprise inclusion in Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI before having to be withdrawn due to injury.
Tottenham are now 11th in the Premier League table and have won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions, with an extraordinary run of form now needed for the north Londoners to have a hope of qualifying for the Champions League.
Their lack of squad depth was exposed against a Chelsea side with secondary options in every position and Romero says his team must take note of what their rivals clubs do in the transfer market.
He told Telemundo Deportes: “The truth is, I would say no comment, but…Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.
“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realise it.
“The last few years, it’s always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible.
“Hopefully, they realise who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”
Romero’s inclusion now looks like a major misstep from Postecoglou and his coaching staff, with the Argentina international reported to be facing a six-week spell on the sidelines with a new muscle problem.
Micky van de Ven was substituted late on and appeared to pull through after his first game in over a month, but Tottenham remain in the midst of an injury crisis ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Rangers.
Guglielmo Vicario, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert are long-term casualties, while there are further fitness fears over Ben Davies, Brennan Johnson and Mikey Moore.
