Red Bull’s technical director Pierre Wache believes the fight during the 2024 Formula 1 season will be far more competitive than it has been in 2023.
Nearly every team have begun their preparation into the 2024 Formula 1 season. With Red Bull being so dominant this season, some expect it to continue into the next. However, that will not be the case, according to Red Bull’s technical director.
Pierre Wache’s belief lies not only in the fact that Red Bull’s rivals can catch up to them, but the fact that Red Bull are currently enduring the damage from their breach of the 2021 cost cap and the ensuing penalty. As a result, we could be in for a very competitive Formula 1 season in 2024.
Wache drew attention to how much progress teams such as McLaren and Williams have made throughout the season.
He added that if Mercedes and Ferrari make the necessary improvements, Red Bull will definitely find themselves in a battle during the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Though Wache does not explicitly state it, his words can suggest that such a domination from Red Bull this season is not from something “special”, but rather the fact that their competitors are underachieving. It makes sense, considering how Mercedes and Ferrari had problems right from the beginning and still have some ongoing issues.
Additionally, the wind tunnel penalty imposed by the FIA on Red Bull should definitely bring teams closer together. The amount of time a team spends in a wind tunnel to gather data translates to very crucial success during a race.
The wind tunnel plays a massive role in the aerodynamics and downforce of the car and is something that Red Bull have gotten right this season. It has been quite a significant part of their success. That limitation could hold back the expected RB20 to a noticeable extent.
So while some may expect to see Red Bull take the driver and constructor championships next season as well, the hindrance placed on the team could become a lot more visible. There is a much higher chance that we could see a different champion in 2024.
