Scottie Scheffler’s 2025 PGA Tour season debut will have to wait.

The world No. 1 announced Monday on Instagram that he is withdrawing from next week’s American Express to continue rehabbing a freak hand injury he suffered while preparing Christmas dinner.

“After consulting with my medical team, I have made the decision to withdraw from next week’s American Express tournament to give my injury more time to heal,” Scheffler wrote. “I am still hopeful to begin my 2025 season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am.”

Scheffler suffered a puncture wound on his right hand while preparing Christmas dinner. The injury forced him to withdraw from the season-opening Sentry, which Hideki Matsuyama won over the weekend with a historic score.

Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, said last month Scheffler’s expected recovery time was three to four weeks. That lined up with The American Express which is set to be played on Jan. 16-19 in La Quinta, Calif.

“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” Smith said in the statement on Dec. 27. “Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.”

Scheffler is coming off a season in which he won seven times on the PGA Tour and nine times worldwide, including a win at the Masters and an Olympic gold medal.

The 28-year-old also joined Tiger Woods as the only player to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award in three consecutive seasons and finished second to Woods in the PGA Tour’s final Player Impact Program.

Scheffler now hopes to make his season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Jan. 30-Feb. 2. Scheffler finished tied for sixth at the event last season. It will be the second signature event of the 2025 schedule.
