Williams names Turvey as 2025 test and development driver

Williams has announced the appointment of veteran racer Oliver Turvey as its new Test and Development Driver, bringing a wealth of experience and technical expertise to the Grove-based outfit.

Turvey, a Cambridge-educated engineer and accomplished racer, will play a critical role in advancing Williams’ development programs and simulator operations.

With over 15 years of experience spanning Formula 1, Formula E, and endurance racing, Turvey joins a team eager to rise through the grid rankings, complementing race drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz in their push for success.

A New Era for Williams Development

A former test and development driver for McLaren Racing, where he contributed to the team’s title-winning campaigns, Turvey’s responsibilities at Williams will include the development of its state-of-the-art driver-in-loop (DIL) simulator, which is set to become operational later this year.

This investment is a cornerstone of the team’s long-term strategy to modernize its infrastructure ahead of the major regulation changes coming in 2026.

Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets emphasized the importance of Turvey’s arrival.

“We’re very happy to welcome Oliver to the team,” said the Belgian. “He brings a vast amount of experience and expertise that will be invaluable to our progression as we continue to strengthen the team across the board.

“The role of a test and development driver is vital to our journey back towards success, and I am confident that Oliver, who will join Harrison Scott, will result in a strong team developing the current and future cars.”

Turvey’s Passion and Ambition

Turvey, who has also competed in and won the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours in the LMP2 class, expressed his enthusiasm for joining Williams, citing the team’s legacy and ambitions as major draws

“It’s an honour to have the opportunity to join such an historic and successful team,” he commented.

“I have long admired Williams and watching Damon Hill win the World Championship for them is a moment that inspired me as I began my own racing career in karting.

Oliver Turvey was a test driver for McLaren in 2019.

“The ambition and determination driving this project are incredibly inspiring, and I’m excited for the challenge ahead to help bring the team back to the top.

“It is a privilege to work alongside Alex and Carlos, who I consider two of the best drivers in F1.

“I look forward to using my experience as both a driver and engineer to work closely with the team at Grove to enhance the car’s performance in the simulator and support the race team.”

A Strategic Step Forward

Williams’ decision to appoint Turvey is part of a broader effort to rebuild its competitive edge. The team made strides in 2024, showing promise in its quest to reclaim a position at the sharp end of the Formula 1 grid.

With Turvey’s unique combination of engineering acumen and racing prowess, alongside the talents of Albon and Sainz, Williams appears poised to take significant steps forward in its development and performance.

This latest addition to the team signals a renewed focus on leveraging talent and technology, ensuring Williams remains a key player in the sport’s exciting future.
