It wasn’t Stan Wawrinka’s day in Rotterdam on Tuesday, but never mind the winning and losing (Wawrinka lost to second-seeded Daniil Medvedev in three sets), what’s important is the fact that the legendary Swiss hasn’t lost the love of the game.
That didn’t go unnoticed by former World No.1 and fellow three-time major champion Andy Murray, who chimed in with praise for the Swiss on social media on Monday.
Murray doesn’t tweet often, but the Scot makes his missives count, that’s for sure.
“Watching Stan the man @stanwawrinka battling with one of the best players in the world at nearly 40 years of age in the first-round in Rotterdam – what a player!” Murray wrote, including the hashtag #levels.

Ranked 155 and with a record of 0-3 on the season, Wawrinka has to rely on wild cards to get into tournaments like Rotterdam, but he’s not given up on his ability to compete and that was obvious in the first set against Medvedev, which he won in a tiebreak. A few good draws and he could be back in the Top-100 – we can only hope.
Wawrinka will turn 40 on March 28.
