On Saturday morning, Keller High School’s Maximus Williamson delivered a sensational performance at the Texas 6A Championships, setting three national high school records in the course of a few hours. While Williamson established marks in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, his effort in the longest distance was the highlight.
In the 200 free, Williamson lowered his own national record to 1:30.46, also good for a National Age Group (NAG) record in the 17-18 classification. A University of Virginia recruit, Williamson’s time would place him in contention for the podium at next month’s NCAA Championships. It also begged the question: Is Williamson’s record the finest male scholastic record of this millennium?

The other contender for best male high school record of the 2000s is the 200 individual medley performance delivered by Hershey High School’s David Nolan at the 2011 Pennsylvania State Champs (PIAA Class AAA). At that meet, Nolan produced a swim of 1:41.39, which shaved two seconds off his record from the previous year. More, the time ended up being faster than the 1:41.57 that Stanford’s Austin Staab clocked on the way to the NCAA title.
