Former world No. 1 Serena is a co-owner of Toronto Tempo, a new expansion WNBA franchise set to start play in 2026.

In a statement announcing Serena’s ownership, the franchise said the tennis legend will play an active role as an owner.

“I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,’ said Serena Williams. “This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes.

“I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”

Four-time Olympic gold-medal champion Serena bounces a tennis ball that becomes a basketball in a new video announcing her ownership stake.

It’s Serena’s second stake in a sports franchise.

Serena Williams and older sister Venus Williams own a minority share of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Forbes reports Serena has an estimated net worth of about $340 million.

“I love sports and I’m so grateful for everything I gained competing on the court,” Serena said. “I’m thrilled to be able to play a role in building those opportunities for more women.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion recalled her tennis roots wind back to Canada.

“Canada has always been a special place for me,” Serena Said. “I played my first professional tennis [match] in Quebec City.

“And I love Toronto—the culture, the food, the people. I won my first Rogers Cup here when I was 19.”

News of Serena’s investment in the Toronto Tempo comes on the same day her husband, Brookly native and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian joined The People’s Bid for TikTok as a stratetic advisor to the group trying to buy TikTok.
