Kansas State basketball’s Nae’Qwan Tomlin applies for diversion

MANHATTAN — Kansas State basketball forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin, who was suspended from the team indefinitely following his arrest last month, has applied for diversion in his disorderly conduct case.

According to Manhattan Municipal Court records, a diversion conference for Tomlin is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday.

Tomlin was arrested in the early morning hours of Oct. 29 on the charges of “Disorderly Conduct: Brawling or fighting,” at Tubby’s Sports Bar in Manhattan’s Aggieville entertainment district. He subsequently was suspended by Wildcats coach Jerome Tang.

If Tomlin’s diversion application is accepted and he complies with the terms of the agreement, the disorderly conduct charges could be dropped. That would clear one hurdle in Tomlin possibly returning to the team, though Tang has said there is no guarantee that he will be reinstated. Tomlin is still enrolled at Kansas State.

Kansas State forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin (35) reacts to a play during last year's NCAA Tournament East Regional final at Madison Square Garden.

“Qwan is going to have to show that he has learned something from this,” Tang said following Tomlin’s arrest. “There’s still a process that’s going on that we have no control over that has to take place, and we find out what happens there. And then we’re going to deal with what we have to deal with here.

“So, I’m not putting a timetable on it.”

Tomlin, a 6-foot-10 senior from Harlem, New York, was the top returning player from last year’s K-State team that won 26 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight, averaging 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. After the season, he tested the NBA Draft waters but ultimately returned to school for his senior year.

At the time of his arrest, Tomlin had just returned to the team after dealing with some “personal issues,” according to Tang.

The Wildcats (2-1) arrived in Nassau, Bahamas on Tuesday for the Baha Mar Hoops Championship, where the Wildcats will face Providence at 5 p.m. Friday and then leave after taking on either Georgia or Miami (Fla.) on Sunday.
